ASHRAE Updates Position Document on Infectious Aerosols

The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) has released an updated Position Document including many citations from the Hernandez Group at CU Boulder where I was a postdoc for 4 years and built upon this earlier bioaerosol inactivation research. This Position Document includes specific statements relating to COVID-19. In summary, this group recognizes the risk that SARS-CoV-2, the causative agent of COVID-19, may be transmitted via the air, and provides recommendations around the use of heating, ventilation, filtration and air conditioning systems to reduce SARS-CoV-2 transmission. This Position Document and other resources relating to the coronavirus pandemic from ASHRAE provide an excellent background for understanding airborne transmission and outline best practices for mitigating airborne transmission risk of SARS-CoV-2 and other pathogens.
